Working together, for your children

Our friendly, professionally trained team of Early Years practitioners is led by Manager Jane Newborough. The management is overseen by a volunteer parent committee, elected by parents of the children. We are a not-for-profit organisation and this means our focus is always the children’s wellbeing.

Key persons and your child

Our setting uses a key person approach. This means that each member of staff has a group of children for whom she/he is particularly responsible. Your child’s key person will be the person who works with you to make sure that what we provide is right for your child’s needs and interests. When your child first starts with us, she/he will help your child to settle and throughout your child’s time she/he will help your child to benefit from the activities that we plan.

Adult to Child Ratio

We maintain and often exceed the ratio of adults to children that is set out in the Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements. This helps us to give time and attention to each child, to talk with the children about their interests and activities and allow the children to explore and be adventurous in safety.

Our designated Safeguarding Officers are Jane Newborough and Charlotte Conibear and our safeguarding policy is available on request.

Staff Training

Our staff qualifications well exceed the required ratios in the EYFS guidelines with over 90% of staff gaining NVQ level 2 or above and over 50% with NVQ level 3. Our manager, Jane Newborough, holds a Foundation Degree in Children and Young Persons Services.

As well as gaining qualifications in early years care and education, our staff take part in further training to help them to keep up-to-date with safeguarding, Paediatric first aid and specialist Early Years education.

We ensure that all our staff are trained to a high standard. Most of our staff also have families of their own; many have children who have been to our playgroup.

The management of our Pre-school and Playgroup

Our parent-led, voluntary management committee is responsible for managing the setting’s finances, employing and managing the staff and ensuring correct, up-to-date policies are in place to maintain excellence in safety, care and education. They also make sure that the setting works in partnership with the children’s parents and that our children’s needs are our number one focus.

Our committee members are elected by the parents of the children who attend the setting. We are legally obliged to have a Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary. We also other have parent representatives on the committee, who have an invaluable part to play in key areas such as fundraising.

Elections take place at our Annual General Meeting and are open to all parents of children who are enrolled with us. As a community based, voluntary managed setting, we depend on the good will of parents and their involvement to keep going. Membership of the setting carries expectations on parents for their support and commitment.

Fundraising

Playgroup relies on fundraising in order to buy and replace toys and equipment. We hold two main events each year – the summer and Christmas fairs, but we also try to organise several smaller fundraising activities throughout the year. If you have any ideas for fundraising or would like to join the fundraising team, please speak to a member of staff or committee. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.
